Weekend update: new charts are live

Just a short note to inform you on the progress of the last few days:

We switched to the ChartDirector chart engine. Charts look better now and can handle larger amounts of data. Next step is to provide you with a URL to publish your charts live on your website. Only if you want to.
The home page should look a bit more appealing. Entries from this blog are shown, as well as 2 example charts.

We welcome your suggestions. Either comment here or send us a tweet @lijst.

Dropped beta, improved the API

Hello again; a short update:

Yesterday we dropped the beta subdomain. All our base are belong to you on a proper “www.lijst.com“.
Of course beta.lijst.com still works. Please update your bookmarks and API software so we can really drop it.

Since December 2008, you could use our basic API to access your Lijst.com data from software. This was implemented by Jeroen while I was relaxing in Montpellier, France. Today we added more unit tests, slightly changed the API specification.
If you like mashups, why not try it out? If you like, you can join my personal effort of programming client-side implementations for the API: code.google.com/p/lijstcom/

Improved charts: proper scaling

Hello there! We’ve improved the charts. Y-values were not scaled, while the labels on the Y-axis were. It was a bug: thanks for the feedback @conortje.

We’re getting close to a usable application! We’ll follow the release early and often dogma. We’re also aware of the importance of the first impression. So, no release without thorough testing of usablity and functionality.

To meet the interested half way, here are four screenshots of our running development version.

Lijst.com is built with Django, which has valuable features readily available: user management, internationalisation and easy object relational mapping.

An excellent example: SugarStats

Last saturday, at the Health2.0 unconference in Amsterdam, I met Marston Alfred, founder of SugarStats. His story is an excellent example of positive results of monitoring yourself.

Marston has diabetes. Over a year ago, he started to digitally administer sugar, food and medication intake, as well as his physical activities. Since no online tool existed, he built his own. That personal project grew into a successful company.

By keeping track of his behavior and its effects on his health indicators, he lowered his HbA1C score by 3 percentage points over 1 year. This lowers the risk of complications caused by diabetes with almost 80%. His story tells of regained eye sight and “not feeling lethargic”.

SugarStats is an inspirational example for lijst.com. We have no niche in mind to cater and are looking forward to see what users will choose to monitor.

It’s hip, it’s innovative, it’s humming: The Next Web 2008 conference in Amsterdam, April 3rd and 4th. I’m attending and really looking forward to it.

Hope to meet many interesting, enthusiastic people and to come back with fresh ideas. Business cards are in. What more do I need?
